9am-4pm (1hr lunch) Facilitated by Margaux Mueller, CRPS, MRSS & Megan Fowler, LC Trauma is an event or series of events and experiences that impact our emotional and physical heath. Individuals with a history of trauma are more likely to use substances or develop a substance use disorder. This presentation aims to increase participants’ understanding of various forms of trauma, it’s impact of individuals and communities, and how to best prevent and address substance use disorders with those impacted by trauma. Participants will better learn to incorporate trauma-informed practices into their work with clients and communities. Margaux Mueller was born in Kansas City and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Upon graduating from the University of Arizona in 2014, Margaux began working in the substance-use treatment field in Phoenix, where she worked with women seeking recovery. After a year of being back in Phoenix, Margaux re-located to Kansas City, where her roots are, and entered the substance use prevention world at First Call as a Community Prevention Specialist and found that her passion really lies on the prevention side of Substance Use Disorder rather than the treatment side. As a person that grew up in a home where substance use was prevalent, she understands the importance of instilling protective factors in children’s’ lives. Margaux has been working at First Call in the prevention department for almost 8 years, and is a Certified Reciprocal Prevention Specialist. Megan Fowler, LCSW, LSCSW, is Director of Recovery Services at First Call, which provides clinical, educational and prevention services to more than 600,000 individuals and families annually in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Fowler’s responsibilities include program oversight, staff supervision, and community outreach locally and state-wide. Fowler earned her MSW from California State University (2009). Her graduate school and professional experience, prior to joining First Call, includes family reunification, therapeutic case management with the HIV positive community, and child protective and behavior intervention services. Fowler’s lived experience in her own long-term recovery informs her dedication to individual, family, and community empowerment in their challenges with substance use disorders. Born and raised in Kansas, Fowler balances sobriety and her job responsibilities with marriage and family life, always appreciative of her own and others’ ongoing recovery journeys.
